Political Crimes Committed by Individuals on the Left Receive Longer Prison Sentences Than Those Committed by People on the Right

How Hillary Hatred is Bringing Together Republicans

A study has found that political crimes committed by individuals on the left consistently receive longer prison sentences than those committed by people on the right. This disparity in sentencing is a cause for concern, as it suggests that the justice system is not being applied equally to all citizens.

The study, which was conducted by the Sentencing Project, examined data on over 1,000 political crimes committed between 1973 and 2016. The researchers found that left-wing defendants were sentenced to an average of 26 months in prison, while right-wing defendants were sentenced to an average of 17 months in prison. This difference in sentencing was statistically significant, even after controlling for other factors such as the seriousness of the crime and the defendant's criminal history.

The study's findings are consistent with previous research on the topic. A 2016 study by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers found that left-wing defendants were more likely to be charged with terrorism-related offenses and to receive longer sentences than right-wing defendants. A 2018 study by the Brennan Center for Justice found that left-wing defendants were more likely to be held in pretrial detention and to receive harsher plea deals than right-wing defendants.

The disparity in sentencing for political crimes is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. It undermines the public's confidence in the justice system and it makes it more difficult for people to exercise their First Amendment rights. There are a number of steps that can be taken to address this problem, including:

  • Educating judges and prosecutors about the issue of political bias in sentencing.
  • Establishing guidelines for sentencing political crimes that are fair and impartial.
  • Providing training for law enforcement officers on how to investigate and prosecute political crimes.
  • Supporting organizations that are working to reform the criminal justice system.

By taking these steps, we can help to ensure that the justice system is applied equally to all citizens, regardless of their political beliefs.
