Health Officials Issue Warning Amidst Outbreak
Orange County health officials are urging residents to take preventative measures against mosquito-borne illnesses following a recent outbreak in the area. The illness, known as West Nile virus, is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause serious symptoms, including fever, headache, and muscle weakness. In severe cases, the virus can lead to encephalitis, which can cause brain damage or even death.

Health officials are urging residents to take the following precautions to reduce their risk of infection:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.
- Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn).
- Eliminate standing water around your home, which can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
- Keep gutters and drains clean and free of debris.
- Repair any holes or tears in screens on windows and doors.
